I first met Jorge Gonzales after joining a group on Facebook called Afrobeat Center. Jorge, was a Ph.D. student at the University of San Diego and founded their Afromexican department. he and I exchanged many emails about the African presence in Mexico and Central America, which eventually lead to me contacting a group called Colectivo Mackandal , an academic student group at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
My first contact there was Saul, a journeyman in the group, met me for coffee at Sambornes and explained the history of the Colectivo. We talked for an hour about their struggle to be supported on campus. Then he arranged for me to meet several other members of the group at UNAM the following day.
