This video shows the advant garde work of Sócrates Corona, a performance artist based in Oaxaca. I was enjoying one of many beautiful Oaxacain nights when I discovered a crowd of people hypnotized by one very original street performer.
Later that week I saw Sócrates at a local watering hole and we spoke briefly about his performance. What I wanted to ask him about was his choice of blackface paint in his costume and the subject matter of his performance. I only understood bits and pieces of his Spanish dialogue. After posting a photo of him on Facebook, I posed the same question. After he added me as a friend, he responded, “….of course i have a reason…but no. i dont explain it to ppl, ´cause its something more abstract i dont talk about social things…in this context i can say u that Black for me is the colour of the original thought that for me is the poetry… a black voice from the shadows of heaven… “ Sócrates remains one of my favorite performers I’ve witnessed on my journey.
